Trails Close to Denver You Need to Hike

Try these five exciting hiking trails all within an hour drive from the city.

Alderfer Three Sisters Park is in Evergreen. The park offers the perfect outing for everyone with 18 easy to moderate trails ranging from .2 to over ten miles long. Families with young kids will love The Wild Iris Loop which winds just .6 miles through a beautiful meadow. Those looking for something more challenging can tackle the trail which follows the boundary of the park. With so many trails, first-time visitors should pick up a park map to avoid getting lost

The South Rim Loop at Roxborough State Park is close to Littleton. While Roxborough State Park offers several trails, the most popular one is the three-mile-long South Rim Loop. This is a moderate hike due to the elevation and because of some steep climbs. This trail offers hikers the opportunity to see red rock formations, meadows and plenty of wildlife. Entrance to this park requires a fee or a State Park Pass.

The Sunset Loop at White Ranch is not far from the town of Golden. The area has several trails you can explore. One of the favorites is the Sunset Loop Trail. This moderate, two-mile-long trail meanders through the Ponderosa pine trees and through the meadows gaining almost 1400 feet of elevation. Wildlife is abundant with frequent deer, elk, wild turkeys, bobcats and bears sightings. But even if you can't catch sight of any animals, you can't miss the Ralston Buttes, a beautiful rock formation off in the distance. For those who want to stay overnight, try to arrange a free permit for one of the ten available campsites.

Mount Sanitas is located in Boulder. The mountain offers several trails which range from challenging to more moderate. The 3.2-mile Mt. Sanitas Loop takes you to the top of the mountain for a breathtaking view. The somewhat flatter Mt. Sanitas Valley Trail takes you two miles through the valley and along a creek. At times, the Valley Trail can be busy, so you may want to go during the week if you are looking for a more peaceful experience. Entrance requires a Park Pass.

The Red Rocks Trail at Red Rocks is near the town of Morrison. This moderate, six-mile trail winds through the open meadow and gives you an impressive view of the Red Rocks. Make sure you wear sunscreen and a hat because there is no shade. Bring plenty of water and try to be on the trail as early as possible to avoid the midday sun.
